Highway 16 Trails Restoration

Hi to all

Though the ski season is over for most of us we have some very important ski-related news for you....

We applied for a $25,000 grant through the Shell Oil Fuelling Contest and have been informed that we were successful in reaching the first stage. This means that we automatically receive $10,000.

The project was put forward by us for improving and upgrading our trails along the Highway 16 corridor East of town. The reason we are concentrating on this area is because we cannot ensure that the road to our upper trail system will be maintained in the  future, as happened last Winter. These trails are in desperate need of work to curb the water erosion by doing some major ditching and installing culverts and bridges. As well, some areas are very rutted and require fixing. Last Winter this trail system provided our main access to the upper part of Tabor Mountain.

Although we applied for this grant through the Sons of Norway Ski Club, the project is a combined effort between our club and the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club, and many others, with whom we have been working  closely over the last several years. The contest for the $25,000 is an on-line voting system by which everyone who registers automatically gets to give 10 votes to the project. Once this is done and you are registered, you have an option to add 10 extra votes each time that you make a purchase at a Shell station (even a chocolate bar.

Shopping at a Shell station is an option that is entirely up to you but we would really encourage you to, at least, register to give our project a boost. Our project will not be on-line until May 4th, at which time you will be able to "view" the project details, but you can register and start collecting points at any time to be prepared. The contest runs for 4 months. We would really appreciate your votes to try and achieve the $25,000.

Please feel free to pass this information along to anyone who you feel may be able to help us.

Thanks,

Norm Clark, Sons of Norway Ski Club

Jim Weed, Caledonia Nordic Ski Club
