What is Para-Nordic?
Para-Nordic encompasses physical disabilities such as blind/visual impairment, amputees, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, brain injuries, and muscle and bone degeneration.
Para-Nordic does not include mental disabilities. Special Olympics oversee mental disabilities.
Even though Deaf is a physical disability, it is not included in the International Paralympic Committee framework. There is a separate Deaf Olympics for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Paralympic Definition of Para-Nordic
Three general categories:
- Blind/Visually Impaired
- Standing skiers
- Sit skiers
Cross Country Canada (CCC) supports and promotes Para-Nordic skiing at all levels. The CCC Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model includes athletes with a disability (AWAD). The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club (CNSC) has adopted the LTAD model to facilitate its delivery of club programs.
