Prince George to Host Major International Biathlon Event in March 2026

Community Support Shifts Gears: Partners Pivot Olympic Trials Funding to March Biathlon Event

PRINCE GEORGE, BC – While the cancellation of the Nordiq Canada 2026 Olympic Winter Games Trials was a profound disappointment for the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club and the Prince George community, a remarkable new opportunity has emerged that promises to deliver even greater benefits for the region.

The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club will host a combined International Biathlon Union (IBU) Regional Event, Western Canadian Biathlon Championships, and BC Provincial Biathlon Championships from March 3-6, 2026. This represents one of the largest biathlon competitions in North America and carries the prestigious IBU continental sanctioning, drawing athletes from across Canada, the United States, and potentially other nations.

The Olympic Trials were cancelled by Nordiq Canada on November 27 due to uncertainty around snow conditions caused by unusually mild November temperatures. The decision to relocate the trials to Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre near Vernon was unexpected and deeply felt by the organizing committee, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners who had invested months of preparation into the event.

However, in the face of this setback, another extraordinary development unfolded. Caledonia was already scheduled to host a significant international biathlon competition in March, and in discussions with the Olympic Trials funding partners about the cancellation, the possibility emerged to redirect their support toward this major event.

“We are incredibly humbled by the response from our partners,” said Kevin Pettersen, Past Event Chair of the 2026 Nordiq Canada Olympic Trials. “When we began discussions about the cancellation, we shared that we were already preparing to host a major international biathlon event in March. What happened next was truly remarkable. Our funding partners and presenting sponsor Canadian Tire Prince George enthusiastically agreed to redirect their support to this event. This overwhelming show of confidence in our club and our community has transformed our disappointment into renewed determination and excitement.”

Partners Rallying Behind Prince George

The Government of British Columbia, Tourism Prince George, Northern Development Initiative Trust, and presenting sponsor Canadian Tire Prince George have all confirmed their commitment to redirect their Olympic Trials support to the March 2026 biathlon event. 

“When we committed to supporting the Olympic Trials, we were investing in Prince George, in our athletes, and in the future of sport in our community,” said Selen Alpay, Associate Dealer at  Canadian Tire Prince George. “That commitment hasn’t changed just because the event has. This biathlon championship represents an incredible opportunity to showcase our community on an international stage, support world-class athletes, and create lasting economic and social benefits for Prince George. An Even Greater Economic Impact

While the Olympic Trials would have generated substantial economic benefits (approximately $770,000) for the local economy, the March 2026 combined biathlon event is expected to surpass that impact:

• 200-250 athletes expected, potentially reaching over 300
• Participants from 6-10 Canadian provinces and territories
• Teams from the United States and potentially other nations through the IBU Regional program
• Expected to generate over $1 million in direct and indirect economic activity through accommodation, food services, transportation, retail, and tourism

World-Class Competition on Home Soil

The event will feature athletes spanning the full biathlon development pathway, from U13/U15 competitors (ages 11-14) through Youth, Junior, and Senior categories, to Masters competitors. National-calibre athletes are expected to compete, including:

• Biathlon Canada Senior National Team and NextGen athletes
• Youth and Junior National Team members
• Top provincial-team athletes from across Western Canada
• Former World Cup and IBU Cup competitors

All the Elements of Excellence

With partners pivoting their Olympic Trials commitment to this event, Caledonia can now deliver all the high-quality elements originally planned for the trials:

• International-calibre live streaming and broadcast capability
• Enhanced spectator experiences, including a large in-stadium video wall
• Strong media and promotional reach for Prince George
• World-class athlete and team services

A Platform for Future Success

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) is placing renewed emphasis on developing North America as a host location for major events. By delivering an exceptional IBU regional event with broadcast capability, professional infrastructure, and strong community support, Prince George will continue to be positioned as a leading candidate for future IBU events at the highest levels, including IBU World Cup events, Youth & Junior World Championships, and Para Biathlon World Championships.

The organizing committee is awaiting confirmation from two remaining partners to complete the funding package for the March 2026 event.

This major championship event is part of a collaborative effort between provincial biathlon associations to create larger, more meaningful competitions. The championships feature sprint, and mass start competitions and serve as a critical stepping stone for athletes working toward national team selection and international competition.

The BC Provincial Biathlon Championships determine provincial champions across all age categories and are a cornerstone of the Biathlon BC competitive structure. Recent provincial

championship events have drawn over 230 competitors, demonstrating the strength and depth of biathlon in British Columbia.
