Into the Woods: Grade 4-7 Winter Observations and Exploration

Canada’s diverse climate zones, including regions like Prince George, BC, experience long, cold winters with snowfall, ice, and occasional rain. These extreme conditions create unique challenges and opportunities for plants and animals, making it essential for students to understand how snow, ice, and fluctuating temperatures impact local ecosystems.

Hosted on our winter trails, our programs foster deep connections to nature through hands-on, land-based learning. Students will explore the sub-boreal forest during winter, investigating how cold climates shape the environment. Through outdoor investigations, they will experience firsthand how ecosystems adapt to harsh conditions, deepening their understanding of the natural world.

Aligned with the BC Curriculum, our programs inspire curiosity, strengthen cultural awareness, and promote environmental stewardship. Students will also gain an appreciation for the traditional knowledge of the Lheidli T’enneh, who have lived with the rhythms of the seasons for thousands of years.

These programs empower students to develop critical skills, become responsible environmental stewards, and embrace outdoor learning, while fostering respect for the natural world.

Overview:

This introductory lesson provides students with a foundational understanding of the local winter ecosystem, with a focus on the boreal forest. Students will explore the structure of the ecosystem and learn about the interactions among its living (plants, animals) and non-living (snow, ice, soil) components during the winter season. Through discussion, observation, and hands-on activities, students will begin to recognize the complex relationships and unique adaptations that allow life to thrive in the challenging winter environment.
